Find Your Focus: Jerry Seinfeld’s Productivity Hack
What do productivity and Seinfeld have in common? More than one would think.
Jerry Seinfeld has been credited with a simple yet profound way to stay on track. Daily intentionality & visual tracking.
He said that in order to be a better comedian, he needed to create better jokes and the way to create better jokes was to write every day. His intention was to write everyday & he tracked this with a RED X on a year-long calendar. Seeing this RED X day over day became his motivation. Days became weeks and weeks became months. His only job each day was to "not break the streak."
So simple & so effective. On today's Find Your Focus call, one participant likened this same approach to the Peloton calendar. Seeing your Peloton progress visually creates momentum. Most people wait to have motivation to do their task. It's totally the opposite. Taking small steps creates momentum & in turn you get motivation to keep going.
The key to creating consistency, according to James Clear (author of Atomic Habits), is to "pick a task that is meaningful enough to make a difference, but simple enough that you can get it done."
I'm in the current process of building out a 6 month plan for my business. I decided this morning that my RED X for the next 6 months is going to be reaching out to one new person per day. The salesperson in me thinks this number is so low and insignificant. However, there are plenty of days that things get busy and this simple (yet imperative) task moves to tomorrow's to-do list.
I'm also considering this productivity hack for my personal goals. If I want to _____ (meditate, read, write, exercise) more, I can start small and create momentum with daily actions. (1 minute meditation, 1 page of writing/reading, etc) Breaking this up into less daunting tasks is so much more palatable for me.
So, my questions to you are --
WHAT IS YOUR RED X? WHAT WILL MAKE THE BIGGEST IMPACT TO YOUR LIFE IF YOU DID IT DAILY?
